Kitchen Cabinet Repair – 4 Ways to Help Improve the Look of Your Kitchen
The kitchen cabinets in your home are one of the first things that people see when they walk into your kitchen. It can also be one the most outdated things in your home if you haven’t kept them updated.
A lot of people don’t know where to start when it comes to kitchen cabinet repair and refinishing. I’ve given 4 simple tips to help you out if you find yourself in a situation that has you stumped.
The first place to look into is removing the old paint or varnish. This can easily be done with a chemical stripper. Make sure you have adequate ventilation when using harsh chemicals. It also helps to remove the doors and hardware and do the work outdoors to avoid breathing in the fumes.
The next step is to fully inspect the cabinets for damage. Any minor damage like stains can easily be removed with a fine steel wool. This not only helps to keep your fingers from getting slivers it also works great by getting rid of the stain without scratching the wood to badly.
Another thing to look for is any ruff surfaces if you find any you can easily smooth it up with fine sandpaper. You’ll notice if you fail to do this step it will really stand out when you add the finish to. It is not as crucial if you plan on painting the surface because a lot of the blemishes will be hidden by the paint.
Once you’re satisfied with cleaning of any stains and the removal of the old finish. Wipe the surface with an oil based clear finish to bring the grain out in the wood. Some people like to paint wood, but it is my opinion that wood looks best natural.
